Permanent Firefighters
Full-time firefighters in stations work as part of a platoon. Platoons contain a minimum of four firefighters of various ranks, depending on the size and nature of the fire station.
Retained (On-call) Firefighters
Retained firefighters are not rostered on duty at a station but are on standby and notified of an incident by pager or mobile phone. They are paid a monthly retainer, plus an hourly rate when responding to emergencies, attending training or undertaking other FRNSW-related duties.
