Firefighters battle major blaze in auto wreckers yard - Fairfield East

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have stopped a fire in a Fairfield East car wreckers yard from spreading to a neighbouring business storing large Lithium-ion batteries.
FRNSW received numerous Triple Zero (000) calls about the blaze in Fairfield Street just after 3am.
The first crews on scene called for additional resources as flames destroyed a two level office, which collapsed, as well as an adjoining workshop, a number of wrecked vehicles and car parts.
Fifteen fire trucks and around 50 firefighters fought for an hour to control the fire, with a ladder appliance and an aerial pumper used to attack the seat of the blaze overhead.
The firefighters worked hard to stop the flames reaching other wrecks and a nearby warehouse, containing a supply of large Lithium-ion batteries.
FRNSW Superintendent, Adam Dewberry, said, “Had the flames consumed those batteries, it would have intensified the fire dramatically.
“There were no injuries reported during the incident,” he said. “Fire crews remain on scene to extinguish the smouldering ruins of the wrecking yard.”
Residents in the area are advised to keep their windows, doors and vents closed to avoid any smoke, which is dissipating.
FRNSW fire investigators will work with NSW Police to determine the cause of the fire and its point of origin.
