Man Rescued from Unit Fire - Darlinghurst

Published: 26 Aug 2020 02:31am

Just after 2:30 this morning Fire and Rescue NSW received the first of many Triple Zero (000) calls to reports of a unit on fire on Royston St in Darlinghurst.

The first crew arrived on scene in four minutes and confirmed a unit was on fire. As local occupants of the building evacuated they confirmed that a man was unaccounted for and most likely trapped in the unit that was on fire.

Firefighters forced entry to the unit and commenced fire attack and search and rescue operations.

They soon located one unconscious male inside the bathroom of the unit, he was quickly removed to the footpath.

The first arriving Station Officer Michael Packham from City of Sydney Fire Station said "We were very lucky this morning, the first arriving crew was made up of an ex NSW Ambulance Paramedic and a currently employed nurse".

Station Office Packham also said "As soon as we got the occupant out, we were able to ventilate and stabilise him ready to hand over to NSW Ambulance on their arrival".

Station Office Packham said "I was so happy to see the unconscious man we had just saved now sitting up in the care of NSW Ambulance, especially given how intense the fire was on arrival".

The fire was extinguished and some occupants of the building were able to return to their apartments.

Fire and Rescue NSW's Fire Investigation and Research Unit are working with NSW Police to identify the cause of the fire.
