Exclusion zone remains at Surry Hills fire scene as wall movement occurs - Surry Hills
Published: 27 May 2023 08:38am
Specialist Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters remain at the Surry Hills fire scene, monitoring unstable walls with laser measuring tools and Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), or drones.
One external wall has moved 70mm over night reinforcing the commitment to maintain the current exclusions zones for community safety.
Light smouldering from deep within the rubble continues.
It is not safe for firefighters to enter the structure to extinguish these fires.
FRNSW firefighters remain on scene to ensure shouldering fires do not break out and take hold.
An Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), commanded by NSW Police, has been stood up to coordinate the operations of the multiple agencies supporting FRNSW, including the making safe or demolition of the damaged buildings.
The NSW Police Arson Squad is investigating the circumstances surround the fire, with the assistance of FRNSW’s Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU).
