Unconscious man rescued from unit fire - no working smoke alarm - Cronulla

Published: 11 Jul 2025 04:38pm

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have rescued an unconscious man from a burning unit today at Cronulla, in Sydney's south.

Just before 10.30am, multiple FRNSW crews responded to reports of a fire in a ground-floor unit of a three-storey apartment block in Seaview Street.

Crews arrived to find the unit well alight and immediately began search and rescue operations in the dangerous conditions.

The unit was filled with heavy thick smoke down to floor level, with visibility close to zero.

Firefighters located the unconscious man in the bathroom and rescued him from the building, handing him over to NSW Ambulance paramedics for treatment.

They then re-entered the unit to extinguish the fire and confirm no one else was inside.

Firefighters worked methodically through the high fuel load inside the premises to bring the fire under control.

Early indications suggest the fire started in the kitchen, however the cause is yet to be determined and remains under investigation.

There was no working smoke alarm in the unit.

FRNSW urges all residents to ensure they have a working smoke alarm installed and maintained in their home.

Working smoke alarms give an early warning and the best chance of escaping a fire safely.

Residents can book a free Home Fire Safety Visit online at www.fire.nsw.gov.au/visits or contact their local fire station.
