Published: 09 Jan 2021 06:26am
Just before 6:30am this morning Fire and Rescue NSW crews responded to Triple Zero (000) calls to reports of smoke issuing from a nursing home on Badajoz Rd, North Ryde.
Firefighters arrived to find an electrical powered chair alight in one of the rooms and quickly worked to extinguish the blaze and prevent further fire spread and smoke damage.
Nine elderly residents of the building were evacuated by nursing staff prior to firefighters arrival, no further injuries were reported.
Fortunately fitted sprinkler systems in the building were activated which assisted firefighters with extinguishment and prevented further fire spread.
Superintendent Luke Unsworth said this incident demonstrates the value of sprinkler systems installed in residential and nursing home settings.
"Fire and Rescue NSW has worked with a range of NSW Government agencies to get sprinklers mandated in Nursing homes, This work is incredibly valuable and delivers safer communities within NSW," he said.
