Bowral Fire Station celebrates centenary - Bowral

Fire and Rescue NSW’s (FRNSW) Bowral Fire Station today commemorates 100 years of operation.

FRNSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell was joined by current and former members of FRNSW at a special function at the station to celebrate the achievement.

The Bowral Fire Station, as we know it today, was built in 1925. For 32 years prior to that, a volunteer brigade operated in the town.

Bowral’s volunteer Fire Brigade was established in 1893. The crew used a hand operated manual pump and hose reel. In 1929, it received its first motorised fire engine, capable of pumping 250 gallons or 1,100 litres of water per minute. Today, the station is equipped with a modern appliance capable of pumping roughly four times that amount.

Operationally, the station has responded to significant incidents:

  • A major ship fire at Port Kembla in 2018, which was a near week-long operation involving hundreds of firefighters
  • A significant fire at a Bowral Bank in 2021 which took crews three hours to bring under control and an additional five hours to extinguish.

As one of 61 FRNSW teams to actively fundraise for FRNSW’s ‘Beat the Burn’ charity, Bowral's crew today accepted the ‘Highest Fundraising Station’ award from Station Officer and Beat the Burn committee member, Daniel Austin. The Station raised $20,502 for kids with life-changing burns last financial year.

Quotes attributable to FRNSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM:

“A centenary is special and today is great opportunity to acknowledge the firefighters and their families who have supported the Bowral Fire Station for 100 years.

“Our on-call firefighters are the backbone of our regional cities and towns, blending their existing work, business and family lives with a commitment to service and protecting our communities.

“Though firefighting equipment and operations have evolved over the years, our firefighters remain a constant presence and vital support for the community.”

Quotes attributable to Parliamentary Secretary for Industrial Relations, Work Health and Safety, and Multiculturalism, Mark Buttigieg MLC:

“Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the history of Bowral Fire Station over the last century.

“We're reminded every day of the dedicated people who’ve served at Bowral, helping to keep generations of local residents safe.

“While Bowral fire station isn’t currently recruiting, we are looking for the next generation of firefighters across NSW. It’s a great time to consider a career with Fire and Rescue NSW.”
