Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators are at the scene of a fatal house fire that occurred last night at Orange in the state’s Central West.

Five fire trucks and around 20 firefighters from Orange and Bathurst Fire Stations attended the scene in Tynan Street around 9.20pm.

Responding to a Triple Zero (000) call, the crews, wearing breathing apparatus and carrying hose lines, immediately attacked the flames.

They entered the single-level home and moved an unconscious 82-year-old woman to safety.

The firefighters commenced CPR until paramedics arrived but the resident could not be revived.

No-one else was in the house at the time.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 10pm as NSW Police established a crime scene.

The FRNSW Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) today has arrived on scene to help police determine how the fire started.

Ten people have died in NSW residential fires so far this year, prompting FRNSW to urge the public to take precautions to prevent further tragedy.

At the start of May, FRNSW launched its “Check Your Bleeping Smoke Alarm” initiative in the lead-up to winter.

FRNSW is encouraging the public to ensure smoke alarms are installed in homes and that they’re in working order.

Almost half (45 per cent) the 3884 homes damaged by fire in NSW last year were not fitted with a working smoke alarm.

Quotes attributed to FRNSW Duty Commander, Dane Philippe:

“The public can book a free home safety visit with FRNSW.

“Our crews can visit your home to provide crucial fire safety advice and even install a free, 10-year smoke alarm if required.

“Simply visit our website - https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/visits or your local fire station to book a visit.
