More than 100 firefighters successfully battle large e-bike warehouse fire

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have extinguished a large e-bike warehouse fire that threatened neighbouring businesses overnight at Alexandria in Sydney’s inner south.

The blaze broke out just before 12.30am in Collins Street.

FRNSW responded with 25 fire units and 100 firefighters as rapidly spreading flames engulfed the property, generating a large cloud of thick smoke.

Inside the premises were dozens of e-bikes and components.

The heavy smoke and elevated position of the business hampered crews as they tried to reach the seat of the fire but they battled on and successfully prevented the flames from spreading to adjacent properties.

At one stage, FRNSW issued a community warning about the poor air quality in the area as the smoke drifted eastward on light winds.

It took fire crews about two hours to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters have sorted the stock, submerging burnt batteries in water to prevent further re-ignition and clearing undamaged batteries from the scene.

FRNSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell, has praised the efforts of the firefighters, acknowledging the danger they faced.

“The crews would extinguish one pile of burning batteries, then turn to pour water on another location, only to see the original spot they were working on catch alight again.

“This happens due to a chain reaction whereby you extinguish a burning cell in the battery pack but the others next to it then ignite.

“Our firefighters also faced the danger of high racks of e-bikes and spare parts toppling over in the smoke-filled building.

“They did a tremendous job preventing the intense flames from spreading to neighbouring businesses.”

No-one was injured in the incident and FRNSW investigators will now seek to determine how the fire started.
