Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have identified a discarded cigarette as the cause of a major garage fire yesterday in Sydney's west.
Firefighters from Blacktown, Seven Hills and Huntingwood arrived at the Killarney Avenue home just after 5pm yesterday and discovered a garage and backyard well alight.
Two adults and four children were rescued by fire crews, who were alarmed to find an acetylene cylinder inside the burning garage, which also contained a large amount of volatile materials, fuel, vehicles being restored, lubricants, engines, tyres, auto parts and tools.
One of the occupants was taken to hospital, suffering shock.
Firefighters stopped the blaze from spreading to two neighbouring homes, another garage and three additional vehicles under restoration.
The fire was contained and extinguished within 45 minutes.
FRNSW reminds the public not to smoke in confined spaces containing flammable material.
