Firefighters will represent brigades from around the state and test their skills when they compete in the NSW Regional Firefighter Championships in Goulburn this weekend.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell will be among those attending North Park over August 1-2 to watch more than 100 firefighters from 25 crews go head-to-head.
Crews will join the competition from regional brigades including Goulburn, Gundagai, Mittagong, Wyong, Trangie, Junee, Oberon, Casino, Turvey Park, Wyoming, Crookwell, Ulladulla, Moss Vale, and Culcairn.
Rural Fire Service (RFS) teams from Kootingal and Country Fire Authority (CFA) crews from Echuca in Victoria are also competing.
Eleven events will test skills in rescues; extinguishing fires in various scenarios, using different equipment; and ladder climbing.
The challenging scenarios promote teamwork under pressure, assess strength and speed, and showcase preparedness for the real-life emergencies first responders can face every day.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend and watch the event. Firefighters will also be on hand to provide safety advice, demonstrate equipment and answer questions.
The competition runs from 8am on Saturday 1 August until 1pm on Sunday 2 August, ahead of the State Championships scheduled for October in Coffs Harbour.
Quote attributed to FRNSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell:
“I’m looking forward to attending the competition in Goulburn and I encourage everyone to come down and see first-hand what firefighters can do.
“This event is a terrific way to showcase firefighters’ professionalism, dedication and camaraderie.
“As well as watching the competition, the public can brush up on vital fire safety during the most dangerous time of the year for house fires by speaking to firefighters and getting tailored advice.
“This is also the perfect opportunity to request a free home fire safety visit, which you can book anytime online or by calling your local station.
“Firefighters can install smoke alarms free of charge and help you create a home escape plan.”
