Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is encouraging locals in the New England and north-west regions to get paid to protect their communities by becoming an On-Call firefighter.
Recruitment is underway for fire stations in Barraba, Manilla, Uralla, Werris Creek and Moree, with applications closing on Sunday 2 August.
From school leavers searching for their next step to full-time workers seeking a new challenge, the opportunity to serve these communities is ideal for anyone eager to help others while earning an hourly rate.
On-Call firefighters help protect life and property by responding to emergencies and delivering fire safety education.
No previous experience is required. The role is an opportunity to develop a wide range of new skills and earn nationally-recognised qualifications while training with an experienced team.
Training includes advanced first aid, a medium rigid licence upgrade, general land rescue qualification, working safely at heights, atmospheric monitoring and gas detection, and incident management.
Increased pay and leave provisions were awarded to On-Call firefighters in August 2025, and the role can lead to a permanent career with FRNSW.
To become an On-Call firefighter, candidates must hold a current NSW driver’s licence, be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia, live or work within a reasonable distance of their local fire station, and have daytime availability to respond to emergencies.
