Drivers survive six truck crash and explosions

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have safely searched the wreckage of a fiery multi-truck crash, west of Goulburn, this afternoon, determining none of the drivers were killed in the incident.
FRNSW was called to the Hume Highway near the township of Breadalbane, just after 5am, when two semi-trailers collided and careered into several other rigs at a roadside rest stop, causing explosions and a large fire.
Around 40 firefighters spent five hours extinguishing the flames, fuelled by the trucks’ loads, which included eight tonnes of butane cans; alcohol; and flammable resin.
Initially, it appeared seven rigs were consumed by the fire but a closer inspection of the charred wreckage by firefighters this afternoon revealed one of the semi-trailers had been cut in half.
Only six trucks were ultimately involved and all their drivers accounted for.
FRNSW HAZMAT crews brought in a specialist drone from Sydney to analyse the plume of smoke over the crash scene.
The so-called ‘sniffer’ drone, which has the ability to detect a range of dangerous chemicals, determined there was no additional risk to the community.
FRNSW and NSW Police were supported by NSW Ambulance, the Rural Fire Service and Traffic Management crews at the scene.
The Hume Highway remains partially blocked, with one southbound lane just reopened, pending further investigations into the crash.
