Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) and NSW Police are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that has killed three people overnight at Wiley Park, in Sydney’s south-west.
The blaze broke out at the property in Cornelia Street around 9.45pm.
FRNSW received numerous Triple Zero (000) calls and rushed five fire trucks with 20 firefighters to the scene.
The crews were confronted by a ferocious fire as they arrived. Flames were issuing from the windows of the home.
They forced their way through the burning exterior of the property, extinguishing scaffolding and garden trellis that had caught alight.
As the firefighters entered a granny flat at the rear of the badly damaged home, they discovered the bodies of three people.
Crews remain at the scene, continuing firefighting operations and assisting police.
They have been joined by FRNSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell, on hand to provide support.
“Fire and Rescue NSW is committed to finding out how this blaze started,” Commissioner Fewtrell said.
“Our investigators will examine the scene thoroughly, once it’s been declared safe.
“We offer our condolences to the families of the victims of this terrible tragedy.
“This is a stark reminder of the dangers of home fires, particularly during the winter period.”
