The Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Firefighter Championships at Wagga Wagga have come to a close, following three days of hard-fought competition and skills development.

Making a return to its inaugural birthplace, the 2024 State Championships proved to be full of camaraderie, community spirit and teamwork.

Victorian visitors, Echuca Country Fire Authority (CFA) took out the top spot after an exhilarating display of teamwork and skill, inching ahead of FRNSW’s Wyong and Kootingal Rural Fire Service (RFS) which came in second and third place respectively.

The State Championships, held every two years, puts teams through their paces in events all designed to replicate real-life scenarios faced by firefighters.

A highlight of the event was Friday’s community engagement evening, which was full of family-friendly fun.

After performances from the FRNSW Band, a torchlight procession and parade, onlookers were treated to a spectacular fireworks display at the Wagga Beach Riverside Precinct.

FRNSW Deputy Commissioner, Paul McGuiggan, said the atmosphere in Wagga Wagga was incredible.

"The Firefighter Championships bring out the best in our people, with teamwork and community spirit in abundance throughout the entire event,” Deputy Commissioner McGuiggan said.

“We can’t thank the communities of Wagga Wagga and Turvey Park enough for their hospitality, we’ve felt so welcome.

“I send my congratulations to the winners from Echuca CFA, and my thanks to all of the other teams who competed.

“I’m confident that each competitor will take home additional knowledge and skills that will in turn serve their local communities."
