Huge fireball destroys waste facility as firefighters battle inferno - St Marys
Published: 30 Nov 2025 08:00am
More than 200 firefighters have contained an inferno that has engulfed a waste facility factory overnight at North St Marys in Sydney’s west.
A huge fire ball erupted, sending flames up to 150 metres into the sky above the Kurrajong Road property, as flames took hold just before 11pm last night.
A large chemical tank was blown into the air and fist-sized chunks of concrete blocks rained down on dozens of Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters during the explosion.
More than 50 fire units attended the blaze as crews battled the flames from all sides, establishing determined lines of defence from holes blown out of neighbouring buildings in one of the biggest fires seen in western Sydney for many years.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries to their hands at the height of the emergency.
FRNSW units from across the Greater Sydney Area deployed to the scene, including five aerial platforms to battle the flames from above, as other fire trucks pumped water by relay to douse the flames.
Hazardous materials (HAZMAT) crews are also on hand, dealing with the subsequent chemicals being consumed in the fire.
The Environment Protection Authority is on scene, along with Police and NSW Ambulance.
It’s not yet known what caused the fire, which is expected to burn for most of the day.
Local residents are being urged to stay away from the scene and close their windows, doors and vents during the emergency to avoid harmful smoke.
