HAZMAT Incident - Inverell

Just before 4:30pm yesterday afternoon, Fire and Rescue NSW received a Triple Zero (000) call reporting an ammonia leak from a refrigerator plant on the Gwydir Highway, Inverell.
Crews from Inverell and Glen Innes Fire Stations, including HAZMAT experts, arrived on scene to find approximately 200 people had self evacuated.
After being informed by staff that the leak was contained, firefighters in protective suits worked to repair the leak. Exclusion zones of 800 metres were put in place by Fire and Rescue NSW crews and NSW Rural Fire Service.
NSW Ambulance attended the incident, although no injuries were reported.
Gwydir Highway was closed in both directions near Fernhill Road, however it has since reopened.
The site was decontaminated and rendered safe shortly before 7pm.
