FRNSW determines cause of large fire at a Sydney boarding school - Riverview
Published: 20 Oct 2022 03:35pm
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators have determined that a line marking machine left on charge started the fire which caused an estimated half-a-million dollars damage to a boarding school at Riverview in Sydney overnight.
The blaze broke out around 3.45am in a 60m x 20m work storage shed on the grounds of the Tambourine Bay Road school.
The flames consumed paint cans, paint thinner, a supply of petrol and a small maintenance vehicle before it spread to the roof.
Aerial platform appliances were among the 16 fire engines called to the scene.
Fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus, attacked the second-alarm blaze from multiple sides and gained control by 5.30am.
No-one was injured during the incident and no evacuations were necessary.
Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.
The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.
