FRNSW issues warning to Newcastle residents - Wickham

Published: 01 Mar 2022 10:35pm

Firefighting operations are continuing at Wickham.

A significant risk of structural collapse persists which is hampering access to the fire. As a result, it is anticipated extinguishment will take some time and firefighting operations will continue throughout the night.
A number of houses and units have been evacuated in the immediate vicinity. An evacuation centre has been setup at the Goodlife Church in Albert St, Wickham. Any displaced residents should seek shelter at that location.
A portion of the building contained asbestos roofing which was affected by the fire. A consolidated cleanup plan is being developed and will be actioned when conditions allow in the morning.

Completion of this process will ensure the area is safe prior to allowing evacuees to return. Further information will be made available as the cleanup process progresses.
As firefighting operations continue, as a precaution local residents should keep windows and doors closed and remain indoors where possible.
