Bushfire at Cowan
Published: 3rd October 2007
This afternoon firefighters from Berowra, Hornsby, Lane Cove and Beecroft responded to a bushfire on the Pacific Highway at Cowan. A strong north westerly wind, high temperatures and low humidity combined with a limited water supply made extinguishing the fire difficult. The thick smoke caused major disruptions for commuters travelling north and south as police closed the F3 and the northern train line. There was potential for property loss in Cowan Village south of the fire however NSWFB firefighters successfully contained the fire and prevented it from spreading across to the other side of the road. Firefighters from the RFS contained and extinguished the section of the fire that was near the railway line. The fire was eventually contained by the early evening by fire crews from the NSWFB, RFS and water bombing helicopters.
