2006 Firefighter Championships: Championships opening ceremony
Published: 22nd October 2006
After a brilliant display of fireworks, a torchlight procession and musical spectacular on Saturday, Commissioner Greg Mullins joined the Minister for Emergency Services, Tony Kelly, to officially open the NSWFB 2006 State Firefighter Championships on Sunday 22 October.
With 37 teams competing from across NSW, Queensland, Victoria and New Zealand, the Championships allows firefighters to test their techniques and skills in a competitive environment. Minister Kelly referred to the emergency services as the "backbone of local communities" and praised each of the teams for their community spirit and dedication to their home towns.
The formal opening ceremony included a performance by the NSWFB Marching Band and Precision Drill Marching team, and despite the rain was well attended by local Port Macquarie residents and visitors. The highlight of the event was the arrival of FireAir 1, the NSWFB's helicopter. The competition ground at Wesport Reserve has been transformed, with tents lining the race-track, community safety displays and a jumping castle and pony-rides for the kids.
