Residential garage fire in Tomago

Published: 6th December 2008

This morning firefighters were involved in a protracted incident on Tomago Road, Tomago. Fire crews from Tarro, Raymond Terrace, Merewether, Hazmat specialists from Newcastle and Maitland and two Duty Commanders responded to a fire in a domestic garage. On arrival fire crews discovered five gas cylinders and 3000 rounds of ordinance were in the garage and established an exclusion zone requiring several people to be evacuated. The garage was destroyed by the fire and crews set up fire hoses to keep the cylinders cool. Firefighters were on scene overnight, assisted by the RFS, ensuring that the cylinders were monitored and safe. After a final check the next morning with a thermal imaging camera and a laser thermometer roads were reopened, residents allowed to return and the ordinance recovered.
