Crookwell Fire Station invites the community to meet the crew | Crookwell

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is seeking to attract a new generation of first responders in the state’s Southern Tablelands region, rolling up the doors of Crookwell Fire Station to showcase its capability and recruit for local On-call firefighters.
On Saturday 5 July, from 11am to 3pm, the crew will host a ‘station showcase’, featuring a kitchen fire simulation, road crash rescue demonstration and sausage sizzle for the community.
Visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions and inspect the vehicles and equipment used to respond to emergencies.
The small town, which is home to around 2,600 people, is facing a firefighter shortage, with the fire station currently looking to fill multiple paid on-call roles.
Anyone considering a career with FRNSW is encouraged to come along and learn about the types of incidents Crookwell Fire Station attends, the tasks it performs and the satisfaction of contributing to their communities in such a unique and positive way.
Crookwell responds to approximately 100 incidents each year and is classified as a ‘General Land Rescue’ station which means its firefighters are qualified and equipped to respond to incidents ranging from road crash rescues to agricultural, animal, domestic and industrial rescues.
FRNSW Zone Commander, Superintendent Dean Campbell, said the community event is a great opportunity to let people know about the benefits of a career in firefighting.
“Our On-call firefighters are the backbone of our cities and towns, blending their existing work, business and family lives with serving and protecting others,” Superintendent Campbell said.
“These are paid firefighting positions, but the beauty is that you can work around other commitments such as work and family.
“Your local fire station relies on people in the community to put their hand up to become firefighters – without that support, regional fire stations cannot survive.
“Crookwell Fire Station is keen to diversify so the crew better reflects the local community it serves.
“We’re currently focussed on attracting men and women from all walks of life interested in being an On-call firefighter.
“Our firefighters receive significant training, which includes online, face-to-face and ongoing learning to ensure they are prepared for anything.
“I’d encourage anyone who’s over 18 years old and interested in joining our team to come along and have a chat to our firefighters at the upcoming information session and community events.”
