Investigation underway into cause of factory fire | Villawood

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators today are trying to determine the cause of a major fire at Villawood, in Sydney’s south-west.

The third-alarm blaze in the single-level chocolate factory in Marple Avenue broke out just before seven o’clock last night.

More than 50 firefighters and 12 fire engines responded to the incident.

Crews took up defensive positions after confirming workers had safely left the building without injury as the fire took hold.

The fire proved difficult to extinguish, mainly due to a supply of cardboard boxes, fuelling the flames.

FRNSW brought in an aerial ladder appliance to direct water on the seat of the fire from above.

Firefighters were supported by NSW Police and ambulance paramedics during the four hour operation.

Experts from the Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) are examining the scene, looking for the cause.
