A man has died in a serious truck crash on the Hume Highway near Campbelltown, with Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) working to extinguish an intense blaze at the scene.

At approximately 6.30am, FRNSW crews responded to calls of a truck crash and fire on the Hume Highway.   On arrival, firefighters found a truck and trailer well alight and immediately set about extinguishing the blaze. Motorists who witnessed the crash reported that one truck driver was unaccounted for.   Several FRNSW fire trucks responded, supported by Rural Fire Service (RFS). FRNSW's response included heavy rescue, hazmat and bulk water tankers.

Specialist Hazmat firefighters monitored water run-off to ensure it did not enter waterways, recovered diesel fuel from the trucks' fuel tanks, and also conducted water tests for diesel and oil contamination.

Firefighters assessed the load the truck was carrying, determining it was food packaging.   This was a multiagency response which included RFS, NSW Ambulance, NSW Police and Traffic Commanders from Transport NSW.

FRNSW has handed the scene to NSW Police to carry out their investigations.
