Building fills with smoke in Wagga Waggga

Published: 7th November 2008

This afternoon firefighters from Wagga Wagga and Turvey Park responded to smoke in a multi-level building in the middle of Wagga Wagga CBD. On arrival fire crews were informed that a strong smell of smoke was present on Level 4 and Level 5 of a five level office building. While the building was being evacuated firefighters in breathing apparatus searched each floor as well as a two-level basement carpark for any sign of smoke and to ensure the evacuation had been completed. A thermal imaging camera was used to check for any heat sources. The air conditioning system was isolated and it was subsequently determined that one of the compressors was the cause of the smoke. Crews continually undertook atmospheric monitoring to ensure the building was safe for employees to re-enter.
