Bushfire at Lane Cove

Published: 27th October 2008

Just after noon firefighters from Ryde, Gordon, Lane Cove, Willoughby, Crows Nest, Leichhardt, Drummoyne, Gladesville, two Duty Commanders and the Zone Commander with assistance from the RFS and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) responded to a fire in the Lane Cove National Park only five kilometres from the Sydney CBD. There were several separate fires burning in the park and firefighters had to contend with changing winds, low humidity, high temperatures and spot fires. Firefighters worked to establish a series of containment lines and provide property protection to surrounding areas. The NPWS helicopter was used to water-bomb the area and a number of local Community Fire Units were activated to protect properties bordering the National Park if needed. Firefighters worked under difficult conditions for more than six hours to extinguish the blaze.
