School fire in Gulgong

Published: 13th October 2008

In the early hours of this morning firefighters from Gulgong, Mudgee, Hazmat specialists from Dubbo and the Duty Commander responded to a fire in a school in Belmore Street, Gulgong. Fire crews arrived to find a science staff room, a science storage room and toilets engulfed in flames. Nearby buildings were protected from the fire while crews battled to bring the blaze under control. Assistance was provided by the RFS and the school principal was on hand to provide firefighters with information as to what was in the storeroom. Hazmat specialists constantly monitored the water run-off and an exclusion zone was set up because of possible structural collapse. The building and contents suffered extensive damage and there was a roof collapse. Investigations are continuing into the cause of the fire.
