Hazmat incident at Broken Hill

Published: 12th October 2008

This afternoon fire crews from Broken Hill and Broken Hill South attended a hazmat incident that occurred in a rail carriage in a railway goods yard in Broken Hill. Once on scene firefighters wearing gas suits confirmed that two drums were leaking and gas detectors identified a low explosive level in the immediate area. The leaking drums were placed inside hazmat containers and the area ventilated to remove all vapours. Fire crews decontaminated the container and all equipment used and performed a final check with gas detectors to ensure that the area was safe.
