Boat fire at Rose Bay

Published: 19th September 2008

Firefighters from Bondi, Woollahra and Balmain responded to numerous Triple Zero (000) calls to a boat explosion in Rose Bay this afternoon. Fire crews reported seeing large volumes of thick black smoke coming from the bay. Upon arrival fire crews found a 28 foot fibreglass power boat, floating 20 meters off the beach and 200 meters from the ferry wharf, engulfed in flames. There were no people either on the boat or in the water and firefighters quickly set up fire hoses and began an attack on the flames from the sea wall and the beach. Fortunately, a moderate northerly wind blew the boat into the shore and with the arrival of the NSWFB fire boat Marine One the fire was quickly extinguished. The crew then boarded the boat for some final mopping up and an inspection.
