NSW Fire Brigades Regional South Firefighters Championship

Published: 3rd September 2008

On Sunday 31 August, the fourth and final round of the 2008 NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) Firefighter Championships, held in Bega, concluded with the team from Nowra Fire Station declared the overall winners, securing their third title for the year and signalling that it might be the team to beat at the State Championships in October.

NSWFB Assistant Commissioner Graham Dewsnap, patron of the Championships, congratulated the retained firefighters from Nowra Fire Station on their outstanding performance.

"Nowra Fire Station has again shown their strength in this competition, taking out eight of the 12 events over the weekend and beating their nearest competitor by more than 900 points.

"They will be a tough team to beat at the NSWFB State Championships later this year."

The team from the Kootingal-Moonbi Rural Fire Service took out second place with Kelso Fire Station coming in third - its third top three finish this year.

Assistant Commissioner Dewsnap said engaging with the community on fire safety was just as important as the competition itself.

"Engaging with the community is a key element of the NSWFB Firefighter Championships - it is an opportunity for us to showcase the skills of NSWFB firefighters and for the community to meet their local firefighters and learn about how they can prevent and prepare for fire and other emergencies.

"Firefighters from Bega Fire Station visited local primary schools in the week leading up to the Championship to promote fire safety and prevention and many of the students brought their families along to the Championships over the weekend to visit the NSWFB's Community Education stand."

Teams from across the state will now begin their preparation for the NSWFB State Firefighter Championships, which attracts firefighters from interstate and abroad.

Firefighters will compete in a series of events over six days, all vying for the title of State Champions.

The State Championships will be held in Tamworth from 18-24 October.
