Twenty new firefighters to protect communities across NSW

Twenty NSW Fire Brigade (NSWFB) recruit graduates will take up new firefighting careers at fire stations across Sydney after successfully completing 16 weeks of intensive training.

NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins presented firefighting recruits with their graduation certificates during a ceremony held at the NSWFB State Training College in Alexandria this morning.

"The role of firefighters working in the NSW Fire Brigades is incredibly diverse and challenging.

Our firefighters don’t only respond to fires, but they manage many other major emergencies suchas hazardous chemical spills, gas leaks and helping SES volunteers after storms and floods.

"Firefighters are constantly testing themselves and the skills they develop in training to respond to a huge range of emergency situations to protect our communities in both city and regional areasfrom fires and other emergencies.

"While all firefighters start off as recruits, there are enormous opportunities for recruits to climb theranks of the Brigade and choose to specialise in areas such as rescue, training, hazardous materials and fire investigation.

"I congratulate all the new recruits on their training achievements and graduation, and wish themlong and rewarding careers with the NSWFB," Commissioner Mullins said.

Prior to joining the NSWFB, some of the graduates worked in industries including carpentry, police, and customer service. Two former pastry chefs, a high school teacher and a forestry worker arealso amongst those to begin new careers in firefighting.

Newly qualified recruits will work at a fire station for three years to become a fully qualified firefighter. Recruits start their new roles tomorrow and will be deployed to a number of stationsacross Sydney.
