Recycling plant fire in Homebush

Published: 19th August 2008

Late this evening firefighters from Concord, Silverwater, Ryde, Rydalmere and Parramatta were called to a factory fire on Burroway Rd in Homebush Bay. Upon arrival firefighters were confronted with a large fire in the front of a two-level building. First arriving officers immediately called for backup as the fire was spreading to the rear where waste was stored before being transported for disposal. Crews from Burwood, Gladesville, Glebe, Ashfield, Chester Hill, Campsie, Leichhardt, Bankstown, Wentworthville, Riverwood, Lane Cove, Busby and Senior Officers arrived to assist in operations. Quick action against a fierce fire prevented the fire spreading to the rear area and this ensured that the waste which contained some medical and biological waste did not enter the atmosphere or waterways. There were no evacuations or injuries to firefighters. it took some several hours to extinguish the fire and investigations into the cause are continuing.
