Chemical smell in Sefton

Published: 26th May 2008

This morning firefighters from Chester Hill and Hazmat specialists from Greenacre responded to reports of a strong ammonia smell in Yamma Street at Sefton. Fire crews were able to identify what premises the smell was emanating from and several people were evacuated from buildings that were downwind. Fire crews in protective suits entered the premises to shut off valves and to locate the exact source of the smell. Hazmat specialists set up monitoring equipment to check all of the effected area. A refrigeration unit was shut down and the source of the leak was traced to a faulty relief valve. Hazmat crews used detectors to ensue that there were no traces of ammonia in any buildings before workers were allowed to return.
