Crane collapse in Leichhardt

Published: 8th May 2008

The collapse of a 50 tonne 40 metre crane resulted in an extended fire brigades operation at a bus depot in Leichhardt this morning. When the crane collapsed it collided with a bank of three 1000 litre compressed natural gas tanks potentially damaging the structural integrity of the cylinders. The lengthy incident required the crane to be removed safely and then, in consultation with gas company representatives, the natural gas cylinders were vented. Hazmat specialists constantly monitored the surrounding area to ensure that there was no build up of any gases and the local community was made aware of what was happening. The incident concluded when the area was declared safe late in the evening.
