Pungent odour in Mascot hotel
Published: 28th March 2008
The occupants of a hotel in Oriordan Street at Mascot notified the NSW Fire Brigades of a pungent odour inside their building this morning. Firefighters from Mascot and Botany and Hazmat specialists from Alexandria were quickly on scene and used gas detectors to check the air quality. Twelve people were evacuated from the seventh floor while fire crews located the source of the smell; a leak from a refrigerator. Firefighters removed the refrigerator from the building and stopped the leak. Electric fans were used to ventilate the area and a final check was made using gas detectors before the occupants were allowed to return. One person was overcome by the fumes and taken to hospital, while two others were treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics.
