Sydney CBD fire
Published: 7th April 2008
A fire in a three level building in Pitt Street in Sydney early this morning was brought under control and extinguished by firefighters from City of Sydney, The Rocks, Glebe, Redfern, Woollahra, Darlinghurst and Alexandria. The first fire crews on scene reported large volumes of smoke and flames coming from the building and reports of people still inside the property. Firefighters using a hydraulic ladder fire engine and numerous fire hoses were able to attack the fire from two directions and contain it to the rear of the building. A search of all three levels found no people inside. The inside of the building suffered extensive damage on all levels. The monorail was shut down during the incident and sections of Pitt and Market Streets closed to traffic. A man has been charged by Police in relation to the fire.
