Residential unit fire in Newcastle

A fire in a residential unit building in Memorial Drive at Newcastle occurred this evening resulting in numerous Triple Zero (00) calls. Firefighters from Newcastle, Merewether, Hamilton, Carrington and Waratah responded to the fire with the first fire crews arriving within six minutes. The building contained five units that were three levels. Firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the fire while carrying out a thorough search of the building. One person was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation. A hydraulic ladder fire engine was used to remove roof sheeting to check if the fire had spread to the roof. Fire crews removed smoke from the building and assisted with the clean up.
