Goods train Hazmat incident in Mittagong
Published: 15th February 2008
Firefighters from Mittagong, Shellharbour, Bundanoon, Bowral, Goulburn and Hazmat specialists from Greenacre responded to a possible Hazmat incident onboard a 1 400 metre long goods train early this morning. The train was stopped two kilometres north of Mittagong and the rail line was closed due to a report of a strong smell of ammonia. Firefighters inspected the nine carriages that were carrying dangerous goods without detecting any traces of ammonia. Crews also checked the surrounding area where the smell was first identified (including a nearby colliery) but were unable to determine the origin of the smell. With all checks completed the NSWFB declared the site safe and the rail line was reopened.
