Broadway shopping centre fire
Published: 12th February 2008
Firefighters from Redfern, Glebe, Pyrmont, Alexandria, Crows Nest, Darlinghurst, Balmain, City of Sydney and Hazmat specialists from Greenacre responded to a fire and explosion at the Bay Street shopping centre at Broadway this afternoon. The fire started in a substation which was underneath the shops taking out all the power to the shopping centre. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and cooled the oil in the substation while other crews rescued several people who were trapped in lifts when the power went out. Crews from Arncliffe and Randwick returned later in the evening to provide lighting and help people whose cars were stranded in the blacked out shopping centre car park.
