More than 60 NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) firefighters have responded to a fire in an electrical substation at a shopping centre located in Bay Street, Broadway.

The fire started around 1:50pm when the substation, located on the ground floor of the centre, exploded igniting oil within the substation.

Fourteen fire engines including hazardous material specialists were on the scene within minutes to contain the blaze and rescue a number of people who were trapped inside lifts.

Firefighters extinguished the fire within 90 minutes but remained at the scene to cool the oil inside the substation.

More than 2000 people were evacuated from the shopping centre without injury.
