Firefighters assist with the delivery of a baby at Uralla

It's a girl! That is the message that the NSWFB Newcastle Communications Centre received this afternoon. It was sent by firefighters from Uralla Fire Station, after they helped to deliver a baby at a local Uralla residence. Firefighters responded to a medical call, as part of their Medical First Responder role, to assist a woman in the advanced stages of labour. When they arrived at the house, the baby's head was already crowning and firefighters immediately assisted the mother-to-be. The Uralla fire crews receive training in basic life support which also covers emergency childbirth, but the arrival of two ambulance officers from Armidale was a welcome sight - they arrived just in time to facilitate the delivery of a healthy baby girl.
