Published: 28th June 2007
Early in the afternoon firefighters from Tumut, Gundagai and Turvey Park were called to a fire in a silo at Tumut. The fire was in a silo containing wood chips and the deluge system, which is a sprinkler system designed to spray a large amount of water quickly onto a fire, had operated. Fire crews liaised with on site specialists and moved 25 employees to a safe area. Constant temperature readings were taken by firefighters to ensure that there was no build up of heat inside the silo. A thermal imaging camera, which can identify any areas of fire activity, was also used by fire crews. After constant monitoring showed that there was no danger the hatches to the silo were opened to verify that the fire was extinguished.
