Church Fire at Windsor
Published: 18th January 2006
At around 5.30am on Wednesday 18 January 2006, fire crews responded to triple zero calls to a church fire at Macquarie St, Windsor. The Windsor Brigade found the church chapel alight and another three firefighting crews, a ladder truck and a rescue unit were sent to assist.
As the fire spread through the chapel, the roof collapsed. There were concerns that the fire would spread to a two level building attached to the rear of the chapel. Firefighters concentrated their efforts on protecting this building and adjacent property.
In an operation that involved 25 firefighters and lasted almost an hour, crews successfully contained the fire to the chapel and effectively protected the adjoining structure. 50% of the church complex was saved, but unfortunately the chapel was extensively damaged. It took firefighters a further 30 minutes to fully extinguish the fire. There were no injuries.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the NSW Fire Brigades’ Fire Investigation and Research Unit in cooperation with the Police.
