Shop Fire, Maroubra Junction

Published: 1st March 2006

At around 1 am on Saturday 25 February 2006 the NSW Fire Brigades received numerous triple zero calls to a shop alight in Anzac Parade at Maroubra Junction. Fire Crews from Maroubra, Matraville and Botany were immediately responded.

When firefighters arrived they found the front of a single level brick building enveloped in flames. The building was used as a charity second hand store. Crews quickly controlled the fierce fire. The building was searched and checked for fire spread by removing sections of the roof and scanning with a thermal imaging camera.

The fire started in contents piled at the front of the shop and quickly breached an awning and front window. The front of the shop and some contents were severely damaged by the fire. Electrical cables in the awning were destroyed causing a neighbouring home unit block to temporarily lose power. Energy Australia restored the power supply. There were no injuries.

The NSW Fire Brigades’ Fire Investigation and Research Unit and Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
