Building Fire, Queanbeyan
Published: 5th April 2006
Just before 9 am on 3 April 2006, the NSW Fire Brigades received a call from the Police reporting a building on fire in Yass Rd at Queanbeyan. The Police report was confirmed by several triple zero callers.
Two crews from Queanbeyan were on the scene eight minutes later to find large volumes of smoke issuing from a large single-level brick building in a car parts business. Crews wearing air cylinders entered the building, conducted a search and started attacking the fire. The fire grew rapidly, forcing the firefighters to withdraw temporarily and fight the fire from the outside. Efforts were concentrated on preventing the fire from spreading throughout the structure and to neighbouring commercial properties. The ACT Fire Brigade assisted and ultimately 15 firefighters were committed to fighting the fire.
It took fire crews an hour to contain the blaze. Firefighters remained at the scene for another two hours mopping up and assisting with investigations. The fire extensively damaged 30% of the building and most of its contents of car parts. The remainder of the building and adjacent properties were saved.
Two people, including a firefighter, suffered minor injuries.
The NSW Fire Brigades Fire Investigation and Research Unit is assisting the Police to investigate the cause of the fire.
