Smoke alarm legislation - firefighters diverse in every language

Published: 6th June 2006

In the lead-up to the introduction of the new smoke alarm legislation on 1 May 2006, NSW Fire Brigade crews in south western Sydney provided important fire safety information to their culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

Working in partnership with Macarthur Diversity Services, Campbelltown firefighters gave 18 fire safety presentations. Topics included the new smoke alarm legislation, smoke alarm maintenance, home escape plans and other key fire safety information using translated fire safety fact sheets.

During the presentations firefighters also discussed fire extinguishers and fire blankets as well as the role of the NSW Fire Brigades.

The local community group leaders were very positive about the efforts of the firefighters and thanked them for their time.
