Shop Fire, Woy Woy

Published: 5th July 2006

At around 5.30pm on 5 July 2006 the NSW Fire Brigades received triple zero calls reporting a shop on fire in shopping centre at Woy Woy. Fire crews from Umina and Kariong were immediately responded, committing 15 firefighters to the incident.

When fire crews arrived they found a single level brick building used as a bicycle shop heavily involved in fire. Having accounted for all occupants, fire crews concentrated on containing the fire to the shop and preventing it from spreading to surrounding businesses. Other firefighters made a direct attack on the fire. Within 30 minutes the fire was contained. However, fire crews remained at the scene until around 8 pm ensuring the fire was completely out, mopping up and assisting with investigations.

The fire extensively damaged the workshop and showroom areas of the business and their contents. The firefighters saved the remainder of the shopping complex, although it was heavily smoke-logged. Crews used mechanical ventilation equipment to clear the building of smoke. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the NSW Fire Brigades Fire Investigation and Research Unit and the Police.
