Finley Firefighter Championships a success

Published: 12th September 2011

Fire and rescue officers from across NSW’s south and south west battled it out in front of scores of spectators at the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Firefighter Regional Championships at Finley over the weekend.

Firefighters from eight FRNSW teams, one Rural Fire Service (RFS) team and one Victorian Country Fire Authority (CFA) team, competed in the two-day event which saw the Berry Brigade claim the regional championship title.

FRNSW Assistant Commissioner and Director of Championships, Jim Hamilton, who officially opened the event on Saturday, said the weekend was a terrific opportunity to meet firefighters from across the state.

“It was good to see the camaraderie amongst all the teams, including the teams from the RFS and CFA, which has helped to strengthen the ties between colleagues,” Assistant Commissioner Hamilton said.

“A special thank-you goes to the Finley brigade for hosting the event and congratulations must go to the area champions, Berry. The home side, Finley, came second in the area and Deniliquin finished in third place.

“The championships helped firefighters hone their life-saving skills and it was great to see Tocumwal and Griffith brigades competing at the regional championships for the first time in a long while.”

The next round of the FRNSW Firefighter Regional Championships will be held at Tumut on 24 - 25 March 2012.
