Gas leak at Maryland
Published: 29th July 2010
Firefighters from Wallsend and Newcastle responded to a gas leak at a service station at Maryland early this evening. On arrival, they found there was an LPG leak in the supply valve from an aboveground tank. The service station had already been closed, the valve was shut off and the fire crews dispersed the vapour with a water "fog" spray. They also used a gas detector to monitor the levels of gas in the atmosphere and ensure there had been no dangerous accumulation of the LPG in the surrounding area. The crews left when they completed the atmospheric monitoring. However, the Wallsend crew returned later in the evening to provide assistance to a service technician and disperse the gas with a fog spray again while he worked on the valve.
